FESTIVAL RECAP: Global Dance Festival 2012

Continuing on with our coverage from Global Dance Festival…

Saturday started much like Friday with slightly more pain in my legs and back left over from the night before. I rushed into the venue a bit early to see Joman on the main stage and looking back, I’m really glad I hurried through my exhaustion. Not only was I treated to a spectacle of bikini clad go-go dancers cooling down the masses with squirt guns and water balloons, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Joman’s eclectic barrage of remixes and originals, specifically a electro-dubstep rendition of ‘Dayman’ from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Check out the music video here)

Up next was the musical debut of local celebrities and EDM festival/concert/event promoters Triad Dragons. Through all the hype, I really wanted to dislike the set (I mean how tacky is it to put yourself on the main stage of your own festival for your firt ever live set), but I have to admit I really enjoyed it. More so than their counterparts, the Triad Dragons pull heavy influence from all the music they have put their name over through the years. Dubstep, house, trance, industrial, trap, moombah, all of it present, mixed well, and building a hybrid genre that left me thinking that these guys definitely deserved their main stage set.

Triad Dragons’ set went long (Mord Fustang’s set was cancelled due to work visa issues) and by the time the sun had gone down behind the mountains, Nadia Ali was starting. The stands were completely full and aglow with all sorts of blinking light sticks and LED toys. Anthemic trance-house melodies kept heads bobbing while Nadia’s feel-good lyrics took center stage. The set was good but it never seemed to take off and get crazy, no doubt a limitation of featuring a vocalist at a dance music festival.

Manufactured Superstars were next and they spared no time in livening things up. Dressed in their usual NASA space suits, Brad and Shawn (both founders of Beatport.com) breathed new life into the packed-full venue with a high-energy set of pop-house remixes. Hundreds of inflatable space men flooded the crowd and by the end of the hour, the party had permanently moved to outer space.

Morgan Page started playing as soon as the Superstars left the stage and he threw down right from the get-go as well, not letting the mood lull for a second. His sound being a little more on the edgy side of things, I started to see bass face appearances here and there and especially enjoyed a bootleg remix of Levels and In the Air that shook things up a bit. Wolfgang took that edge even further with a back to back banger set that the highlight of my night. A bit more sample driven and varied than his counterparts, Wolfgang slayed his Red Rocks debut and utterly brought the house down with his single ‘Illmerica’.

Above and Beyond closed things out with a bang, playing the songs that everyone had come to hear. This being my first A&B experience, it’s hard for me to draw comparisons to a typical set of theirs, but judging by the crowds reaction, theses EDM heroes made the $90 day pass well worth it. Looking back at the sold out venue, it was clear that this was a night that was important to a lot of people. More than just a concert, the LED screens on stage suggested that this was ‘group therapy’ and I am inclined to agree just based on the atmosphere that filled the venue. Smiles on every face and dancing on every step, this crowd was home and I am so stoked I was a part of it.
